LinkedIn ghostwriter vs. agency vs. in-house hire vs. AI tools: which should you choose?

Daniel NogueiraDaniel Nogueira, Co-founder, Scale Content Labs·Updated

The short answer

If you have the time and enjoy writing, do it yourself. If you don't, the real choice is who builds the system around the posts. AI tools draft but don't know your stories. A freelance ghostwriter usually writes the posts and stops there. An in-house hire gives you control but needs managing. A done-for-you agency writes, posts and runs the lead capture, at a higher price than writing alone.

The five options side by side

OptionYour timeWhat you getWhere it falls short
Do it yourselfMostYour exact voice, no costConsistency. Most founders stop within weeks when work gets busy.
AI writing toolsA lotFast draftsThey don't know your clients, stories or opinions, so the posts read like everyone else's. You still edit, post and follow up.
Freelance ghostwriterSomeWell-written postsUsually writing only. Lead capture, email and follow-up are left to you.
In-house hireSome, plus managingControl and deep contextOne person rarely covers strategy, writing, visuals and funnels. You manage and train them.
Done-for-you agencyLeast (1–2 hrs a week with us)Posts, visuals, lead magnets and DMs as one systemCosts more than writing alone. Only worth it if LinkedIn is where your buyers are.

How to decide

  • Do you enjoy writing and have 5+ hours a week? Do it yourself. Nothing beats your own voice.
  • Do you mostly need your ideas put into words? A good freelance ghostwriter is enough.
  • Do you need LinkedIn to produce leads, not just posts? You need someone who builds the capture system too: an agency, or a team you assemble yourself.
  • Is content central to the whole company, across many channels? An in-house hire starts to make sense.

Where AI fits, honestly

We use AI in our own process: AI drafts, we edit, you approve. It's a good first-draft tool. It isn't a replacement for knowing what your buyers worry about and which of your stories answers it. That part comes from interviewing you, and it's where most of the value sits.

If you're weighing the cost of each option, start with what LinkedIn ghostwriting costs.
